Lancashire Police have spoken to Pendle Liberal Democract leader, David Whipp, after he was caught on camera taking a Conservative election leaflet from a resident's letterbox recently.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said:
"David Whipp has today been spoken to by Officers from Burnley CID in relation to removing a campaign leaflet from a letterbox.
He was spoken to at his home address, and appeared remorseful. I think we can be confident that he regrets his actions.
The lady at the house where the leaflet was removed has been approached and spoken to. She is not making any complaint about the removal of the leaflet, and advised me that the leaflet was returned to her letter box prior to any Police involvement.
There is no theft as there is no intention to “permanently deprive” in this situation as occupier of house confirms the leaflet was indeed returned to their letterbox before any Police involvement."
So it seems Cllr Whipp's quick thinking to return the leaflet before the police arrived saved his skin.
County and Borough Elections take place on Thursday May 6, 2021.
