PEARL on the agenda at P&R Committee

Pendle Borough Council and Barnfield Construction's controversial partnership, PEARL, is set to be discussed at this Thursday's (May 27) Policy & Resources meeting.

Members of the public will be allowed to attend the 7pm meeting at Nelson Town Hall, following the relaxing of Coronavirus measures.

The PEARL partnership is continually under scrutiny after questions of transparency and the legality of teaming up with one preferred company, went unanswered under the previous Labour Council leadership.

County Councillor and former Labour MP candidate, Azhar Ali, called for a public investigation into the 12 year deal with PEARL, and many others have voiced similar concerns.

Questions revolve around the fact that Pendle Borough Council sells land to PEARL for development by Barnfield Construction, and no other company is allowed to tender for the work. There are also no details regarding how much the land is sold to PEARL for, and whether it was at market value or a reduced rate.

Furthermore, no details of the contract drawn up between PBC and Barnfield have been made publicly available (particularly regarding profits), despite Pendle Council being a public authority using public money for this opaque adventure.

The new Conservative administration of Pendle Borough Council will now have the opportunity to share the information requested by the public, in the name of transparency, or questions will continue to be posed about this secretive deal.
