OFSTED: Saint Michael and All Angels Primary, Foulridge - Good

A primary school in Foulridge has had its rating upgraded after a recent OFSTED inspection.

Saint Michael and All Angels Primary, Foulridge was deemed to 'Requires Improvement' in the last OFSTED inspection in May 2022, but staff and parents will be delighted to see the latest visit on April 30, 2024, rate the school as GOOD.

The inspectors were impressed with turnaround of the school and found little room for improvement. A thoroughly positive report and a superb reverse in the school's achievements.

OFSTED said:

"The school has high expectations for what pupils should achieve, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Pupils typically live up to the school’s expectations and achieve well across the curriculum.

Children in early years quickly learn the school’s expectations and routines. They are supported well by staff to understand how to manage their emotions. Pupils value the reward systems that are in place for recognising positive behaviour.

Following the last inspection, the school took swift action to strengthen the design and delivery of the curriculum. The broad and ambitious curriculum makes clear what pupils should know in each subject from the early years to Year 6. The school has focused sharply on improving the knowledge and skills of staff. This has supported them to be able to carry out their roles effectively and to implement the school’s curriculum well. Staff present information clearly and design appropriate activities to teach the intended knowledge. Pupils typically achieve well across a wide range of subjects."

The few areas of improvement show how well the school has done to address previous failings

OFSTED said:

  • In a small number of subjects, assessment systems are less well developed. This makes it difficult for the school to accurately check whether pupils have secured the intended curriculum knowledge in these subjects. The school should ensure that assessment strategies enable staff to precisely identify gaps in pupils’ learning so that their knowledge builds securely over time.
  • Some aspects of the personal development curriculum are not as well developed as they could be. This means that some pupils have a limited understanding of these aspects of the school’s programme for their personal development. The school should ensure that all aspects of the intended personal development curriculum are implemented effectively so that pupils are fully prepared for life in modern Britain.
